Waltham, Massachusetts: Outdoor Movie With a Live Score Performed at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts
The masters of live movie scores are at it again, and this time they have a giant inflatable outdoor screen. The Alloy Orchestra will perform the score for an outdoor movie showing of "Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness," being screened for free at Brandeis University's Chapels Field on Monday evening. The 1927 silent film, about a farmer's struggle for survival in the jungle of Siam (Thailand), was nominated for an Oscar. If the directors, Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, don't ring a bell, just think "King Kong."
Meanwhile, the three-man "orchestra" is always as interesting to see as to hear. Yes, they're brilliant on instruments like the clarinet or accordion, but you really ought to hear them play the bed pan.
"Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness" will be shown with a live score performed by the Alloy Orchestra at 8 p.m. Monday, Chapels Field at Brandeis University, 415 South St., Waltham. Free. 781-736-2270.
