Whether you already own an Open Air Cinema outdoor movie system, or if you're planning on purchasing one to start your own
park cinema event, there are some essential steps to planning your event that will make it a sure success. We've detailed some of these steps in the past, but as a refresher, here are some notes that will get you on your way to an inspiring and entertaining outdoor cinema screening:
1. Choose your movie. Your
park cinema event's success is most determined by the film you choose to screen. Make sure to choose a movie that your audience can relate to. If you have a community with a lot of families, a film that the entire family can enjoy is a good idea. Some films are great for the kids, but not so entertaining for parents and young adults, singles, and young couples. But there are certain films, such as Harry Potter, Twilight, Star Wars, and even some animations such as Toy Story that will entertain your community members of all ages. However your community may be more specific, and might be interested in an independent film or something nostalgic or classic.
You know your community best, but make sure to think carefully about what they'll enjoy. If you have a way to reach out to your community such as through Facebook or through a newsletter, try conducting a poll or requesting submissions for ideas. If your community votes and chooses the film, you'll be guaranteed they'll love it. Keep in mind that certain films are more expensive and more difficult to license (you'll need licensing when screening your movie in a public arena).
As a general rule, bigger blockbuster films and more recent films are more expensive and may not be available for licensing. Make sure to check Swank or Criterion for details on licensing, or contact us at 866-802-8202 to get information from an Open Air Cinema experienced technician.
2. Choose your venue. Your
park cinema event's success is also largely determined by the venue where you'll hold the event. You may already have one in mind, such as a community park or a regular gathering place for your community, but if you're looking for ideas, keep a couple things in mind. First, make sure the venue is ideal for an outdoor screening. Is there reliable power available? If not, you'll need a generator to run your inflatable movie screen fan, projector, audio visual system and your other electrical components. What is the lighting situation like? Are there bright street lights nearby that flood the space with too much light? The darker the area the better (you'll have a brighter, cleaner movie image), but having control of lights that turn on and off is the best scenario, so you can turn them on afterwards for your guests' safe departure.
Are there adequate restrooms and parking? Is the venue in a good central location for your audience? If your community has to travel more than 15 minutes to the event, you may not be able to draw as big of a crowd. Again, you know your community best, so make sure to keep their best interest and safety in mind when choosing your venue. When you discover the ideal location for your community, you'll be able to use the venue over and over for your park cinema film series, and things will go much smoother in the future.
3. Publicize your Event. Now that your
park cinema event has a movie title and a location, publicize your screening so that you can get the maximum number of community members in attendance. You may have specific ways that you already reach out to your community, and do what has worked best in the past. Having a responsive email list is a great way to advertise to your community, but also networking through Facebook, Twitter and other social networking channels can be highly beneficial. Give your community at least a two weeks notice for your event. If you publicize too far in advance, and don't follow up as you approach the big day, your audience may forget. If you are holding an entire film series, publicizing the entire series' film list ahead of time is a good idea. That way your community members can look forward to upcoming screenings, and realize the significance of the park cinema series. If they can't make this weekend's screening, they will likely make next weekend's.
There are other steps to consider when planning your
park cinema event, but when you take these into consideration, you'll be well on your way.
