Abingdon, Virginia: The Virginia Highlands Festival Features a Family-Friendly Outdoor Movie in Abingdon

The Virginia Highlands Festival in Abingdon began this weekend with lots of activities for the whole family, including outdoor movies on an inflatable screen. Festival organizers wanted to make sure the event would be kid-friendly, so Aug. 1 has been dubbed Family Fun Day with lots of fun events starting at 11am.

Bristol White Sox and their mascot, Dingbat, will come to sign autographs while kids can bounce, slide, jump and play games across a variety of attractions. Sharky of Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies is swimming into town, as well. The outdoor film Tales of Despereaux will screen at 9pm.

All events are free, so don't miss this great opportunity to see a movie under the stars with the whole family. The Tales of Despereaux is a fun, animated adventure movie: the tale of three unlikely heroes - a misfit mouse who prefers reading books to eating them, an unhappy rat who schemes to leave the darkness of the dungeon, and a bumbling servant girl with cauliflower ears - whose fates are intertwined with that of the castle's princess.
